Our StoryBrew Monster started when 4 friends joined forces to bring together their combined skills as a brewer, an accountant, a sale manager and a designer, with the dream of building one of Wales' best independent breweries. The idea originated in early January 2017, and by March 2017 we were in a position to register the company and start building the business. To fund the original brewhouse and working capital, we took personal loans totalling £45,000 and raised an additional £44,000 from friends and family. This allowed us to buy a 4 bbl (650 litre) brewhouse and take a 3 year lease on a premises in Cwmbran. The brewhouse was installed in September 2017, and on 27th October 2017 we had our official launch party in Cardiff's Radisson Blu hotel (one of the first stockists of our beer).
We enjoyed rapid growth from the outset and by the summer of 2018 were starting to think about expanding our production and exploring new distribution models. In June 2018 we held our first brewery pop up bar, a 3 day event (Friday-Sunday) attracting hundreds of fans from across Cwmbran and beyond. Later in 2018 we opened our first micropub, The Butterfly Collector, in Barry, and a tap room in our brewery in Cwmbran. Before the end of 2018 we had also doubled our brewing capacity by acquiring a new 8 bbl brewhouse.
2019 brought yet more exciting new projects for us. We kicked off our first Crowdcube campaign, raising over £100,000, which funded the opening of our first "Brew Monster Tap House" in the centre of Cardiff.
As we went into 2020 we were continuing to grow our reputation for good beer and good venues, and in January 2020 we took over another micropub, The Atig, in Llantwit Major, whilst also working on securing our second "Tap House" in Cardiff's Mermaid Quay. As everyone remembers, March 2020 saw the UK enter lockdown, but undeterred, we continued to push on with our expansion plans and when lockdown restrictions were eased in August we opened our second Tap House in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay.
At the end of July 2020 we reached the end of the 3 year lease on our Cwmbran premises. The unit had been our beloved home and headquarters for 3 years, but due to limited space (and an inflexible landlord) we were forced to look for new premises to move our brewhouse. This proved challenging while the world remained in lockdown, but we were fortunate to find a great location in Caerphilly town centre. Coincidentally we got the keys for our new premises at Unit 1, Lon Y Twyn, Caerphilly on 31st July 2020, the same day we said goodbye and handed back the keys to our Cwmbran unit.
As we emerge from lockdown we are seeing our business go from strength to strength. Daily sales are already well in excess of the levels we were seeing pre-lockdown, and we expect them to increase substantially further when we start offering food within our bars and when social distancing restrictions are eventually relaxed in Wales.
We continue our efforts to create one of the UK's best brewery and tap rooms in Caerphilly, which we hope to open in late 2020. We will shortly be launching our second Crowdcube campaign to raise funding for the new brewery and tap room, and to fund the opening of yet more venues across South Wales in 2021, as we continue on our mission to become Wales' best craft brewery!
Meet the TeamWe are a diverse team of individuals, each with different backgrounds and bringing different skills and ideas to the business. We believe the strength of our team is the secret to making Brew Monster a success.
Glenn has been with Brew Monster from day 1. He is a Chartered Accountant and has an MBA from Cardiff Business School. He trained at a Big 4 accounting firm and has experience in both finance and operations at a FTSE 100 company. In 2018 he was recognised in the WalesOnline 35 Under 35. Glenn has responsibility for setting the Group's strategic direction.
Tom worked at local rival brewery Tiny Rebel for 6 years before joining Brew Monster in 2018. He has brewed a vast range of beer styles in volumes up to 5000L. Since joining Brew Monster he has overhauled our processes and rewritten our recipes, which has resulted in our beers winning multiple beer awards.
Jack is a recent recruit at Brew Monster. He brings not only a vast knowledge of brewing but also an insatiable passion for craft beer. He has already developed several new beer recipes that will soon be released into the world.
Head of Bars and Sales
Richard has a wealth of experience in the beer/bar industry and has run some of Wales' most successful bars and pubs over the past 2 decades. He is a fluent Welsh speaker and has been pivotal in re-shaping Brew Monster's mission to become a leading bar and pub operator across South Wales whilst also embracing our Welsh heritage and roots.
Matt joined Brew Monster in 2019, helping make our first "Brew Monster Tap House" in Cardiff City Centre a huge success. Matt's passion for social media and marketing has shown through in our fast-growing social media presence and engagement. Matt continues to be a key member of the team, leading the creative side of our business.
Gareth joined Brew Monster in 2018. He has a wide range of skills and takes on any new projects including new bar openings, promotional initiatives, events and day to day operations.
